What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a disorder that is characterized by extreme nausea and persistent vomiting. HG starts around the 4th or 6th week of pregnancy and reaches its worst state between 9 to 13 weeks. Its symptoms may start showing some improvement in the 20th week of pregnancy, however not in every case. The vomiting caused due to hyperemesis gravidarum can lead to dehydration and can be so bad that some women are unable to go about their day-to-day activities. It becomes difficult for their bodies to keep any food or liquid down. Women with HG may experience complete loss of appetite, poor weight gain and fatigue that may last for weeks or months.
What Causes Hyperemesis Gravidarum?
Doctors don’t know the exact cause of HG but it is believed to be caused due to an increase in hormones like HCG and estrogen during pregnancy. Both morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum are related by human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced by the placenta. This hormone is produced at a very high rate during the early weeks of pregnancy.
Who’s at risk of developing HG?
